The evidence behind what we say

Research

VOLTARA’s approach to EMS training is grounded in published research and FDA-cleared technology. This page lists what we claim on this site and the source behind each claim.

The technology

Electro Muscle Stimulation uses a suit fitted with electrodes to deliver low-frequency electrical impulses to your muscles during guided exercise. Physical therapists and rehabilitation clinics have used forms of electrical muscle stimulation since the 1970s.1 NASA and the European Space Agency have studied electrical stimulation as a countermeasure to muscle loss during spaceflight.2 Our equipment is FDA-cleared to stimulate healthy muscles and improve or facilitate muscle performance.345

Strength, core and stability

Peer-reviewed research on whole-body EMS reports real gains in muscle mass and strength. A randomized controlled study using the same once-weekly protocol offered at VOLTARA found significant improvements in trunk and leg-extensor strength.6 This is the source behind the strength, core and trunk-stability statements on this site.

Energy expenditure — the “afterburn”

A single session may increase energy expenditure during and after training.7 A controlled study measuring metabolic rate for 72 hours after one whole-body EMS session found a significant increase in resting metabolic rate (approximately 25%) and total energy expenditure (approximately 9.5%) — a net effect of roughly 460 kcal, detectable up to 48–72 hours post-session.

Circulation

May support circulation during training.8 A randomized study found that whole-body EMS increased peak blood velocity and was associated with greater lactate clearance compared with active recovery alone.

Relaxation and well-being

Training may support relaxation and well-being.9 A controlled study found that whole-body EMS training had a statistically significant positive effect on subjective well-being and relaxation.

Muscle group activation

Over 90% of major muscle groups activated simultaneously, per manufacturer data.10
